Platinum miner Lonmin is the heaviest faller after the price of the precious metal declined. HBOS is lower after investors and politicians criticised an attempt by two Scots bankers to block Lloyds TSB's bid for the bank. FTSE 100 down 126 at 4,277.

1402: HSBC remains in the doldrums. Swiss bank UBS has reduced its price target for the banking giant by 50p to 770p, after HSBC issued a trading statement that indicated 'a group performing relatively strongly but nevertheless finding revenues harder to come by across most geographies.' FTSE 100 is down 103 at 4,300.
